Langmuir waves associated with discontinuities in the solar wind: a statistical study

چکیده
We have reported previously that short bursts of Langmuir waves are frequently observed in the solar wind in isolated local depressions in the magnetic field magnitude, which are called ”magnetic holes”. The magnetic depression regions are often bounded by directional discontinuities (DDs). To study the relation between the waves and the discontinuities, we have examined 402 magnetic field discontinuities in 11 days of Ulysses data which cover a range of radial distances from the Sun (1.8 to 5.2 AU) and of heliographic latitudes (−1.9◦ to −80◦). It is found that Langmuir waves occur at only ∼ 9% of the discontinuities identified. About 75% of the DDs which have waves are associated with magnetic depressions. The waves have a higher occurrence rate at tangential discontinuities with magnetic depressions than at rotational discontinuities with little change in the field magnitude. The results suggest that the reduction in the magnetic field strength (a holelike structure) is important for the excitation of the observed Langmuir waves. The adiabatic focusing of suprathermal electrons passing through the magnetic holes may be a source of free energy for this process.

Langmuir waves upstream of interplanetary shocks: Dependence on shock and plasma parameters
[1] We have examined 178 interplanetary shocks observed by the Wind spacecraft to establish which shock and plasma parameters are favorable for the production of upstream Langmuir waves and therefore to determine which shocks are likely to generate interplanetary Type II radio bursts. Of the 178 shocks included in this study, 43 produced upstream Langmuir waves, as evinced by enhancements in wa...
متن کاملLangmuir Wave Electric Fields Induced by Electron Beams in the Heliosphere
Solar electron beams responsible for type III radio emission generate Langmuir waves as they propagate out from the Sun. The Langmuir waves are observed via in-situ electric field measurements. These Langmuir waves are not smoothly distributed but occur in discrete clumps, commonly attributed to the turbulent nature of the solar wind electron density. Exactly how the density turbulence modulate...
متن کاملSuprathermal Electron Strahl Widths in the Presence of Narrow-band Whistler Waves in the Solar Wind
We perform the first statistical study of the effects of the interaction of suprathermal electrons with narrow-band whistler mode waves in the solar wind (SW). We show that this interaction does occur and that it is associated with enhanced widths of the so-called strahl component. The latter is directed along the interplanetary magnetic field away from the Sun. We do the study by comparing the...
متن کاملWaveforms of Langmuir turbulence in inhomogeneous solar wind plasmas
Modulated Langmuir waveforms have been observed by several spacecraft in various regions of the heliosphere, such as the solar wind, the electron foreshock, the magnetotail, or the auroral ionosphere. Many observations revealed the bursty nature of these waves, which appear to be highly modulated, localized, and clumped into spikes with peak amplitudes typically 3 orders of magnitude above the ...
متن کاملStatistical Analysis of Discontinuities in Solar Wind Ace Data and Comparison with Intermittent Mhd Turbulence
The comparison between Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) solar wind data and simulations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence shows a good agreement in the waiting-time analysis of magnetic field increments. Similarity between classical discontinuity identification and intermittency analysis suggests a dynamical connection between solar wind discontinuities and intermittent MHD turbulence....
